Security of strategic air links review undertaken

Thursday 02 October 2014

The Scrutiny Committee is undertaking a review to investigate the security of the Island's strategic air links and will examine whether the current policy framework that is intended to deliver vital air links from the Islands of Guernsey and Alderney is fit for purpose.

Air links are an essential lifeline connecting the Islands to the UK, Jersey, France and the wider world, supporting business, tourism and local travel within the Bailiwick.

The Scrutiny Committee will investigate the current policy and its effectiveness, and assess the responsibilities and accountabilities of the various government departments involved. The review will specifically question whether a cohesive approach is achieved by the various government departments and agencies involved with air transport links. This review will examine strategic air links to both Guernsey and Alderney.

The review will evaluate the current policy framework of the Islands' strategic air links and question what the Islands' future aviation strategy should be.

Specifically the review aims to address concerns raised by politicians, businesses, professional bodies, hospitality industry and private individuals on this topic.

The Scrutiny Committee has appointed a panel to conduct the review, which comprises Deputy Paul Le Pelley (Chair), Deputy Peter Sherbourne, Deputy Lester Queripel, Deputy Barry Paint and Deputy Arrun Wilkie.

Panel Chair Deputy Paul Le Pelley said:

"The Scrutiny Committee is committed to reviewing the current policy framework to ensure that the Islands are effectively and efficiently served by their air links.

The past year has seen significant change in relation to local air service provision. The Committee will address concerns raised in both political and public arenas and examine the decisions made by the States of Guernsey in this area."

The Committee can confirm that a call for evidence will follow shortly when interested parties including members of the public will be invited to contribute to the review. The evidence gathered will be tested in a public hearing prior to publication of Committee's findings in the first quarter of 2015.
