The Integrated Transport Strategy outlines many ways of encouraging increased use on the Island and one area that the Department is focusing on first is the installation of additional cycle stands and shelters.
There are already quite a number of cycle stands in place around the Island, and it can be seen that these are already being well used and in some locations are full to capacity. The location of the existing cycle stands, along with other useful cycling information, is available at www.gov.gg/cycleguernsey.
Colin Le Page, from the Environment Department's Active Travel Unit said:
"The Environment Department is looking to install further stands in key, central locations next to shopping areas, businesses and places of interest so that cyclists are well catered for, and to encourage motorists to seriously consider choosing to cycle more regularly or even for the first time.
Better bicycle shelters are also definitely needed as there are only three public covered shelters in place across the Island, one at the Crown Pier and two (joined ones) at the North Beach. Covered shelters can accommodate many cycles and provide a much more efficient use of space than vehicle parking spaces. The Department is therefore looking to introduce more of these. The Active Travel Unit is also pleased to offer advice and assistance to businesses and other organisations that would like to install cycle parking at their premises."
The Department has submitted planning applications for the following:
- 10 additional cycle stands covered with a double shelter at the North Beach car park;
- 2 cycle stands at the Park Street Triangle;
- 3 additional cycle stands covered with a wall mounted canopy at the car park in Le Bordage;
- 5 new cycle stands at South Quay (Southside), St Sampson's;
- 4 additional cycle stands near the junction of the Bridge/New Road, St Sampsons.
