The Scrutiny Management Committee's independent review of 'Island Wide Voting' has been released.
In September 2022 the Scrutiny Management Committee (SMC) working with the States' Assembly Constitution Committee (SACC) formed a panel consisting of Elected Members and members of the public with relevant expertise, to review the first full Island Wide Voting election. The 2020 island-wide voting election was a significant change from previous systems which were based largely around parish or district representation.
It was made clear at the outset of this process that it was not the intention of the Review Panel to recommend a change to the system of election for 2025. The main objective was to gather evidence reflecting public opinion and to propose improvements for future general elections.
Scrutiny Management Committee's President and the Review's Chair Deputy Yvonne Burford said:
"For the 2025 election, based on the evidence considered, the Review Panel believes that some changes could be made that would constitute improvements to the current system and these are set out within the report as recommendations to the States Assembly and Constitution Committee. This Report also provides a broad evidence base for any possible future reconsideration of the electoral system locally".
