Local research shows that islander's health is adversely impacted by air pollution, particularly those with respiratory conditions such as asthma, and this can lead to increased hospital admissions during episodes of elevated air pollution levels. A survey was conducted to gauge Islander's current views on air pollution and to make recommendations to the States on what controls we need. The survey closed in April 2016.
The results to the survey were used to inform a Policy Letter that was debated by the States in February 2017. The Policy letter included an overview of the consultation results and a full version of the responses can be found here. The States resolved to approve the content of the Policy Letter subject to one amendment, allowing the burning of garden waste on any day of the week. The revised legislation (Part VII (Air Pollution) of the Environmental Pollution (Guernsey) Law, 2004) will need to be drafted before the proposals are legally binding.
