The Environment Department is advising that the fees payable for all theory tests to be undertaken from 1 July 2012 will be increased to £35 for a motorcycle or motor car test and to £50 for a goods or passenger vehicle test.
The current fee for a theory test in any category is £30.
The increase is necessary to cover the additional charges that the Department has had to meet in delivering and enhancing the service. In October 2011, the Department increased the number of theory test questions from 35 to 50 for motorcycles and motor cars and from 35 to 100 for goods vehicles and passenger vehicle tests. The increase in questions was to ensure that candidates have a greater theoretical knowledge and understanding of safe driving before they are permitted to take their practical test. The increase has also brought our tests more in line with other similar licensing jurisdictions with whom the Department has reciprocal driving licence exchange agreements in place.
The additional questions, particularly in the case of goods vehicle and passenger vehicle tests, has increased the duration of the tests and, therefore, costs to the Department in terms of meeting the necessary invigilation costs.
