Update - South Coast Cliffs

Friday 10 January 2014

Environment Department response to media enquiry from BBC Radio Guernsey.

BBC Radio Guernsey enquiry:

Just a question from BBC Radio Guernsey:

Have there been any inspections by Environment of the south coast cliffs following the storms?  Has there been any damage, rockfalls or landslides along that section of coastline?

Finally, has inspection of the cliffs been delegated to the parishes?

Environment Department Response:

Inspections of cliffs around south and east coast beaches will be undertaken routinely over the next week or so by Environment Department staff. The man-made defences remain the priority for inspection for the time being.

All the south coast beaches are used daily by dog walkers or fishermen who know the areas well and several are in regular contact with the Environment Department. If there were any rock falls or other concerns it is very likely these would have been reported to the Environment Department directly or through the Parish Constables or moorings committees. The inspection of cliffs around beaches has not been delegated to parishes.

The Environment Department would always welcome information from the public if anyone comes across a new rock fall or land slip at a beach or cliff path, Tel: 717200 or env@gov.gg
