Thursday 06 February 2014

Further to the media release issued on 3 February the Environment Department can confirm that works are either underway or instructed as follows:

Cobo - cracks to masonry near Cobo Road filter, repairs in hand.

Rocque Poisson - hole in wall repaired and re-pointing/minor repairs on seaward side continues in that area.

Perelle Slipway and seaward facing wall opposite Biloterie Road to Richmond - damage will be repaired this week, dependent on weather/tidal conditions.

Vazon opposite Grande Mare - minor undermining repaired. Repairs to coping stones on wave wall in hand.

Fermain - the condition of wall has deteriorated. It will be reviewed by States Property Services Engineers to determine options.

New Damage Reported:

Long Store - damage to wall near slipway, temporary protection installed pending works as soon as weather conditions allow

Rocquaine, North of Rue des Issues - damaged masonry inspected, repairs in hand.

Route de la Lague - stone missing from wall, works will be undertaken when tidal conditions allow.

Albecq - damage to masonry facing, to be inspected.

Portinfer Shingle Bank - erosion, to be inspected.

East L'Ancresse - damage to the apron, to be inspected.

There was no breach to the L'Eree Shingle Bank in the high tide this morning. Reports at 13:00hrs today confirm there was no damage to the bank but a considerable quantity of weed and some shingle had been brought over at this morning's high tide.

The costs of coastal defence repairs from the repairs undertaken following the New Year 10m tides and strong winds is approximately £40,000, some works at Saints Bay are still to be completed.

Costs for recent works have not been finalised but it is anticipated that the works at L'Eree Shingle Bank, Vazon, Rocque Poisson and Route de la Lague will be approximately £4,000-£5,000.

The works at Cobo, Perelle, Rocquaine and re-pointing at Rocque Poisson are anticipated to be more expensive but anticipated at less than £12,000.

Works for Albecq, Portinfer, East L'Ancresse and Long Store have not yet been estimated as further investigation is needed at these sites.

The damage to the wall at Fermain indicates a major project requiring a substantial capital sum and thus will be subject to a full appraisal of options and associated costs before a decision can be taken on the way forward.

It is inevitable that in the coming days more cracking and damage will be revealed during inspection by the SPS Engineers. It is thus prudent to assume that the Department's annual revenue budget for maintenance of coastal defences is now virtually depleted as a result of the exceptional 10m tides combined with high winds over the last five weeks.
