Update - Storm Damage to Coastal Defences

Friday 07 February 2014

Further to the media release issued on 5 February the Environment Department can confirm that the following coastal defence damage has been reported in the last 48 hours:

Salerie slipway - damage to cobbled surface

Les Banques - damaged apron opposite Admiral Park

Vale Castle - minor damage to top of sea wall opposite

Bulwer Avenue - damage to face of sea wall

The repairs will be undertaken over the next month according to priority. It is anticipated the costs will be in the region of £10,000.

The Environment Department has arranged to remove a quantity of shingle from behind the sea wall at Croix Martin, St Saviour on Monday 10th February. This will be taken to the L'Eree shingle bank immediately to the south west where it will be used to augment the stone there. Care will be taken that sufficient shingle is left in place to ensure that the base of the sea wall is well protected.

The removal of some of the shingle behind the Croix Martin sea wall should reduce the quantity of pebble spilling on to the road during the next high spring tides in early March. The works will be undertaken by Environment Guernsey on behalf of the Environment Department between 09:00 and 16:00 when the coast road will be closed. A digger and lorry will be used to move the stone the short distance down the coast road.

The Environment Department wishes to thank all the members of the public who have contacted the Department to report damage to coastal defences or footpaths resulting from recent storms and high tides. Anyone spotting damage to a coastal defence or path is encouraged to call the Department during office hours on 717200 or env@gov.gg
