Approximately two years ago the Airport junction was changed to operate as a '4 way' filter' rather than as a '3 way' filter to incorporate a new temporary access into a field which was being used as a compound as part of the Airport rehabilitation project.
As there are no longer regular movements to and from the field access, the filter will be reverting to its original '3 way' filter layout. The filter box markings which were painted over the pavement to give a better indication to drivers on the main road that the aforementioned compound formed part of the filter will now be blacked out. Also, the water filled barriers which had blocked off the pavement to divert pedestrians around the site to a new crossing point across the private field access will also be removed so that pedestrians can reuse the original public pavement. The supplementary signs indicating a '4 way' filter below the normal triangular filter sign will be removed.
Weather permitting these works will be carried out this Sunday 18 May.
Reinstatement of the traffic islands, removal of the raised tarmac surface which was installed to accommodate the heavy plant crossing between the compound and the airport, replacement of kerbs, reinstatement of the earth bank and a new footpath surface will be carried out at the end of the summer. As these works will involve the requirement for traffic signals followed by short-term closure of the road it was not considered appropriate for the works to be undertaken in the height of the tourist season.
