Update on Repairs to Coastal Defences

Wednesday 28 May 2014

Media Enquiry from Guernsey Press:

I am working on a round-up of the coastal damage around the island and how the repairs are coming on. I know quite a few of the smaller jobs have been completed and the larger jobs are waiting for funding, but we haven't done an overall look at the repairs since the storms in February.

I have tried to round-up all the damage we have reported on (sorry if I have missed any).

Is it possible to have a line on each about what has been done or what needs to be done and maybe a costing. Could I also have a general round-up about the challenges of dealing with such extensive damage and when it is likely all the repairs could be completed.

Hole in walkway at Salerie Harbour (due to be repaired last week)

Havelet slipway subsidence

Fermain seawall collapse

St Martin's Point railings

Petit Port lower section of steps washed away.

Saints Bay slipway

Saints Harbour railings

Portelet rock armour (repaired in Feb?)

Damage to Perelle slipway and the seaward side of the battery opposite the hotel. (repairs close to completion in Feb)

Coping stones on the south side of the L'Eree sea wall had moved.

Ropes and posts at Lihou blown down and a better barrier was being investigated.

Stone steps opposite the Rockmount was damaged and cracks in the wall. (repairs underway in Feb)

Hole in wall at Bulwer Avenue.

Damage to kiosk area at L'Ancresse.

Sgingle across the path on eastern side of headland near Fort Le Marchant.

Seawall damage at Long Store and Admiral Park.

If I have missed any, please add them in.

It is hoped a story like this will highlight how much is taking place or needs to be undertaken.

Can you get back to me by 3pm on Friday, that would be helpful, so we can run it on Monday.

Environment Department Response:

Hole in walkway at Salerie Harbour. Due to be repaired first week of June once the contractor completes the L'Eree works

Havelet slipway subsidence. This is the responsibility of Guernsey Harbours who report that they are continuing to assess the options for the slipway and are working closely with States Property Services to identify the most effective engineering solution. This work is on-going. Contact Guernsey Harbours for further information.

Fermain seawall collapse. Options paper being prepared for consideration by the new Board.

St Martin's Point railings. This is the responsibility of Guernsey Harbours who report that there are no plans to re-instate the railings in the immediate future and the area remains closed to public access. Contact Guernsey Harbours for further information.

Petit Port lower section of steps washed away. No change in situation from the response provided 12th May, i.e. Due to the pressure on the Department's budget to deal with the essential repairs of numerous coastal defences the work at Petit Port has been put on hold.

Saints Bay slipway. Repair completed end of April.

Saints Harbour railings. Repairs completed.

Portelet rock armour (including rebuilding the end of the slipway). Repaired in February.
