Guernsey Press Enquiry:
Can you please confirm what work has been going on at Chouet over the last few days?
-What is being done and why?
-When did the work begin and when will it end?
-Who has carried out the work?
Environment Department Response:
The Environment Department has appointed Geomarine to repair 60m of the boulder bank at Chouet bay, south of the kiosk. The boulder bank was damaged during the storms early in 2014 and some boulders have slipped down, exposing the soft earth cliff at the edge of the Common.
Work started on Monday to dismantle the first sections of the damaged bank and granite aggregate infill was placed against the soft cliff. The boulder bank will be rebuilt from the beach upward to protect the cliff from erosion.
The majority of the work on the bank will be undertaken from the beach. The top most stones will be placed by the digger working from the Common above. The surface of the Common will be protected from the digger movements during this phase of the works to reduce the risk of damage to the coastal grassland.
The works will take approximately two weeks.
