Media Enquiry from Guernsey Press:
I am getting in touch because I spotted someone posting on Guernsey Ebuy a warning about a large loose nail being found at the new play park.
I just wanted to know whether this was something you were aware of? Were investigating?
Have any more been found? Is it being treated suspicious? Or considered a one off?
Environment Department Response:
Staff of the Environment Department were made aware on 12 May of a post on the Guernsey Ebuy page on Facebook. The post, made on 11 May at 9:17pm, showed a photograph of a large nail on top of a domestic radiator with a caption stating it had been found "at the park, in the new playground". The post did not indicate the exact location of the nail found or when it was found
The member of public who saw the post spotted it by chance and took the responsible action of reporting it directly to the Environment Department who manage Saumarez park and the playground.
Following receipt of the report the playground was inspected immediately. No other nails or other foreign items with the potential to injure were found.
Prior to opening the site was carefully checked and areas such as the wood chip were carefully screened and checked to ensure no foreign objects were present. The Playground is also inspected regularly and includes a litter pick and raking of wood chip.
The Department is as satisfied as it can be, based on its inspection programme that the risks have been minimised. However managing risk is of paramount importance to the Department and therefore we urge anyone using the Playground, who finds anything there of concern, to report it directly to us on Tel: 717200 or env@gov.gg.
