Media Enquiry from Island FM:
We heard last week there was to be a courtesy crossing installed at the new Co-op being built just past the Half Way heading towards the Bridge.
I was under the impression this was to be a 'trial' similar to the one in town - however, I saw it being built this morning and it looks pretty permanent.
Can the Environment Department confirm if it is a permanent or a temporary crossing, and when was planning permission granted for this?
Environment Department Response:
The Environment Department has, for several years, considered options for improving safety for vulnerable road users in this area. The new development afforded a timely opportunity to improve safety as part of the development and at no cost to the tax payer.
A new off road bus stop and shelter, as well as improvements in the pedestrian crossing facilities in the form of a central refuge between the traffic lanes and also provision of dropped kerbs, is being provided by the developer. The refuge will provide a safer link for pedestrians and cyclists wishing to cross to and from the coastal footpath to access Vale Road or the new development and, in particular, the convenience store element.
This uncontrolled crossing will be similar to the one along the Town Quay ie pedestrians will need to wait for a safe gap in the traffic before crossing and drivers have the right of way.
