Media Enquiry from Guernsey Press:
People have recently raised concern online (Facebook) about traffic issues at North Beach, caused by visiting motorists on the roundabout.
These include claims that some French drivers, coming off the ferry, have gone round the roundabout the wrong way or stopped to check directions while halfway round.
Is this an issue that Environment is aware of?
Has it been made aware of any recent incidents?
Does it believe the signage is adequate as drivers come off the ferry and head towards the roundabout?
Just so you know, I'm going to both PSD and the Police.
Environment Department Response:
The Environment Department was previously unaware of this type of incident taking place but does not consider it uncommon for there to be a level of confusion whilst drivers adjust to new surroundings, including for some, driving on the opposite side of the road to what they are used to. It is for this reason that there are significant visual clues to guide motorists on the roads around the Harbour commencing at the exit of the Customs sheds and continuing to the Weighbridge roundabout. There are numerous painted road markings in place and pole mounted signage, some of which includes French wording.
On the approach to the roundabout there is directional signage so drivers can choose an appropriate lane and there are bollards located on the roundabout itself indicating motorists must pass to the left, i.e. clockwise direction of flow. In light of this, the Department is satisfied that adequate signing in place to guide and instruct motorists. In addition, it publishes advisory leaflets including a French version of 'Driving in Guernsey is Different' on its website. This includes information on the differences visiting drivers can expect when enjoying a stay on the Island.
