Update - Lorry Safety Measures

Monday 07 September 2015

Media Enquiry from Guernsey Press:

I was wondering whether I could get a comment from the department following national news that lorries without safety equipment to protect cyclists and pedestrians will be banned from London's roads from next week.

Under Britain's first safer lorry scheme, heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) in the capital must be fitted with side guards to help prevent cyclists being dragged under the wheels in the event of a collision. They must also have a certain type of mirror which will give the driver a better view of bicycles and pedestrians.

I was just wondering whether Environment will be looking at this scheme with interest?

Is it something perhaps the department might consider adopting?

Are local lorry drivers required to fit any safety equipment at present?

Any other comments.

We are running something in tomorrow's paper so if it is possible to get a comment by 3pm today it would be much appreciated.

Environment Department Response:

One of the Integrated Transport Strategy workstreams is to review Guernsey's Construction and Use legislation, particularly in regards of making it a legal requirement in the future for suitable mirrors to be fitted and side guards to be introduced on heavy goods vehicles.  This review is currently underway and therefore the impact of the current scheme in London will be monitored with interest.
