We're running a story today about a cyclist who was in a collision with a car at the Salarie Corner car park.
We've been told that the Environment Dept drew up plans to improve safety along the east coast cycle path.
Environment Department Response:
The Environment Department has considered and identified works to be carried out to address the safety issues at the gap in the wall to the slipway involving closing this gap and redirecting traffic around the car park. Today's accident would appear to be at a different location but the Department is not yet in receipt of full details of this accident.
The Department is committed to considering the full length of the cycle path and to improve safety where practical. However, the absence of funds resulting from the States previous decisions on the Transport Strategy has a bearing on when these investigations can be completed and works commissioned. It should be noted that the works carried out to commission the trial of a single lane along the Town Quay were part and parcel of programmed works carried out by the Public Services Department and incurred minimal additional expense. A full review of the cycle path and works to improve cycle safety requires realisation of the Transport Strategy funding income stream.
