Trading Standards works with businesses (including charity shops etc) in the following areas:
Weights and Measures
Trading Standards administers the Weights and Measures (Guernsey and Alderney) Law, 1991
If you buy or sell anything by weight or measure and are not sure of your legal obligations then please contact us by emailing tradingstandards@gov.gg or phoning (01481) 220379
You are likely to be covered by this law if you work in the following areas, although any trade can be covered:
- Licensed Trade
- Butcher
- Baker
- Grocer
- Haberdasher
- Builders Merchant
- Freight Carrier
- Jeweller (if you trade in scrap metals or precious stones by weight)
- Petrol and diesel forecourts
Fair Trading including advice to businesses
If you are concerned about any area of Fair Trading, such as the fairness of your contact terms with consumers, your obligations when selling online, advertising practices, selling practices or pricing then please contact Trading Standards for advice on (01481) 220379 or email tradingstandards@gov.gg
Safety of Consumer Products

Enforcement Policy
When carrying out any enforcement action, such as visiting businesses, seizing good or equipment or preparing prosecution reports, Trading Standards will always follow it's Enforcement Policy which is available by following this link.
