Wednesday 07 December 2016

On 6 December 2016, the fourth Bailiwick Council meeting was held in Alderney. The Council discussed a range of current intra-Bailiwick issues, including constitutional and international relations matters, including the islands work engaging with the UK Government on its exit from the EU.

The Council discussed co-operation on maritime matters including maritime international obligations and fisheries. The management of consultation on pan island initiatives was also explored in order to help ensure the islands are each cited on policy development at an early stage.

The meeting was chaired by the President of the States of Alderney. Stuart Trought said:

"The last Bailiwick Council meeting was held before the UK Referendum on membership of the EU.  This event has increased the importance of the Council as a forum to share views and agree our approach.  There are many new opportunities and ways in which we plan to embrace innovation which we plan to explore."

Deputy Al Brouard said:

"It is even more important for the Bailiwick to work together more closely together as we look to work closely with the UK as it leaves the EU.   The islands were well prepared for the outcome of the EU referendum and are now engaging regularly with UK Government and Parliament. The challenge will be to maintain the pace of this engagement during 2017 and the Council is committed to playing a role in that process."

Conseiller Maitland said:

"The Bailiwick Council supplements our bilateral relationship with Guernsey and ensures we have greater dialogue with Alderney.  We took the opportunity to take forward the plans for a Sark Liaison Group with the States of Guernsey."
