Following a successful trial period, the 6 feet (1.8m) temporary width restriction for motor vehicles using Rue de Bas, St Sampsons, except for those vehicles that need to gain access to premises, will become permanent.
The trial was put in place following concerns from local residents regarding the safety of pedestrians including children from St Sampsons High walking to school. Concerns were also raised regarding vehicles exiting properties, and for cyclists using the Baubigny cycle path which crosses Rue Des Bas.
Traffic and Highway Services Road Safety Officer Rex Williams said,
"During the trial there were no reported incidents, and following the trial period we have received overwhelming support from residents in the area supporting the initiative and to make the scheme permanent. The change will mean that this lane which was previously busy with commercial vehicles will allow greater safety for pedestrians and cyclists wanting to link into Les Effards and Baubigny walking and cycle paths and so will help promote more active travel."
An Order to amend the Prohibited and One-Way Streets Ordinance, 1989, by making permanent the traffic experiment will come into force on 27th March, 2017.
