Victor Hugo Coup for Guernsey Museum

Monday 23 April 2018

Guernsey Museum will be mounting a prestigious exhibition of Victor Hugo's art in the summer of 2018. Hugo is of course best known as a writer, but his artwork is rarely seen.

Dr Jason Monaghan explains, "Over the past couple of years we have been in negotiation with the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and the Maison de Victor Hugo, Paris, to borrow these artworks. It is four decades since a major exhibition of Hugo's art has been shown outside France, so this is something of a coup for Guernsey."

The ambitious project is being made possible through generous sponsorship by Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management. Chris Colclough, Head of Portfolio Management, Guernsey says "Victor Hugo is one of Guernsey's most famous residents and although he lived here in exile, he made the Island his home and created some of his most celebrated works here. Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management is proud to support Guernsey Museum with this initiative as part of our continued commitment to enabling local sporting, community and cultural events".

"Quite by chance, the exhibition will coincide with a period in which Hauteville House will be closed for renovation," Dr Monaghan adds. "It means that Guernsey will still have a Victor Hugo attraction for the 2018 season. We are very grateful to our sponsors and to the lending institutions for enabling this to happen."
