Grammar School & Sixth Form Centre results - A Level and International Baccalaureate
The Guernsey Grammar School & Sixth Form Centre has achieved its best A Level results since 2009. The A Level pass rate has risen this year to 99.8%, with nearly 90% of grades at A*-C.
More than a quarter of the grades received were at A*- A, with two thirds of grades at A* - B. Initial Value Added - a national method of measuring how much pupils have progressed - scores indicate a continued improvement on previous years, placing the school in the top 5% of sixth forms nationally.
In addition to this, 26 students from the Grammar School & Sixth Form Centre completed their International Baccalaureate Diplomas. This year's cohort achieved an average total point score of 31.1, which compares with the average point score worldwide of 29.9. The average individual subject grade was 4.9, which is above the worldwide average of 4.8. The highest individual points were an impressive 40 out of 45 diploma points, equivalent to more than 4 A* grades at A Level. These results, which are consistently above average, are testament to the hard work and dedication of both students and their teachers and they should be congratulated on the results.
The table below outlines results for International Baccalaureate Diplomas:
| 2016 | 2017 | 2018 |
38+ points | 11% | 15% | 8% |
30+ points | 74% | 62% | 65% |
24+ points | 95% | 100% | 96% |
Average IB score | 32 | 31 | 31 |
NB Because of the small cohort size, each student represents approximately 4% in 2018.
Kieran James, Deputy Headteacher and Director of Sixth Form Studies at the Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre, said:
'We are delighted with this year's excellent results, which are testament to our students' and teachers' commitment and dedication, as well as to the culture of independent learning that has continued to develop in the Sixth Form. These results build upon last year's impressive Level 3 Value Added measure, which would place our school in the top 5% of similar Sixth Forms in the UK in terms of student progress.'
Liz Coffey, Headteacher of the Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre, said:
'The students and their teachers should be congratulated on their achievements at A Level, in which they have risen to the challenge of more rigorous A Levels. Students from a wide range of backgrounds have made excellent progress, thanks to their hard work and the support they received from their tutors, teachers, parents and carers.'
Guernsey College of Further Education
This has been another fantastic year for Level 3 full-time and apprenticeship technical professional qualifications. While provisional at this stage the overall pass rate is 97%, the highest since 2013. Over half of the students on graded qualifications gained Distinction or Distinction* grades, which are equivalent to A or A* respectively at A Level.

'This is an outstanding achievement for our students and staff. I am delighted to see the culmination of everyone's work in such brilliant results. We know the amount of effort and dedication that both students and staff put in towards achieving these qualifications and are so grateful for all the support students have received from their families, friends, and employers, which has helped everyone to achieve these outstanding results.'
Deputy Richard Graham, Vice President of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, said:
'I would like to congratulate all of those who achieved an outstanding set of results this year. This excellent outcome is due to the students' hard work but we should also recognise the support and dedication of their teachers, lecturers and support staff who have played such a significant part in the students' success. All of us in the Bailiwick should be proud of what they have achieved together.'
