Guernsey's Waste Strategy encourages islanders to reduce waste, and provides services and facilities that make it easy to reuse and recycle.
Many unwanted household items that are still in good condition can be given a new lease of life by someone else. Reusing these items stops them ending up as waste.
Recycling is the next best option, as it ensures we take maximum advantage of materials that we cannot either reuse or prevent becoming wasting in the first place. It has many benefits, including saving energy.
For example, to make an aluminium can from recycled material uses 95% less energy than to manufacturer it from raw material. The energy saved from recycling just one glass bottle would power a TV for 1½ hours.
Similarly, recycling also reduces demand for finite natural resources, and the energy needed to mine or extract raw materials where they naturally occur, and transport them around the world for processing.
