The Committee for Education, Sport & Culture are implementing a "one school, two college" model of secondary education following a States debate in January 2018, and is asking for suggestions on what to call the new 11-18 school and its two colleges.
In October 2018, ESC announced that their recommended sites for the two colleges were Baubigny in St Sampson's and Les Beaucamps in Castel. However, the names of these sites will change. It is important to remember that the three current 11 to 16 schools (la Mare de Carteret High School; les Beaucamps High School; and St Sampson's High School) and the one 11 to 18 school (Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre) will close and the new 11 to 18 colleges will open in their place.
The whole community are impacted by education and therefore the CfESC are looking for suggestions for the name of the new school and its two colleges. Ideas can be submitted until midnight on Sunday 21st April and members of the public can share their ideas either through an online form, by email or by letter.
The Committee ask that when thinking about your suggestions, you consider:
- relevance to education
- association to the Bailiwick
- prominence and timelessness
- uniqueness
- how easy the name is to pronounce and spell
The Committee have come up with some ideas to get you thinking. These are available online at www.gov.gg/nameourschool as well as more information on how you can get involved. If you would like paper copies, please contact the Education Office on 733084.
Suggestions can also be submitted by email at educationfuture@gov.gg or by writing to The Education Office, States of Guernsey, Sir Charles Frossard House, La Charroterie, GY1 1FH.
The Committee for Education, Sport & Culture will consider all suggestions and the names will be announced towards the end of this academic year. The names of the new school and its two colleges will begin to be introduced from September 2020 and parents and others will be provided with at least one year's notice of such changes.
