Tuesday 10 September 2019

La Mare de Carteret Primary School has been awarded a Distinction in the afPE Quality Mark for Physical Education after 'demonstrating outstanding commitment to improvement in Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity.'

The award is valid for three years, commencing July 2019.

In summarising the reasons for a Distinction award, the validator commented on the quality of teaching as being good or better, and improving through the partnership with Guernsey Sports Commission. During the validation visit, year one pupils were observed working independently, cooperatively and competitively, with well-developed basic skills, and in year three most pupils had continued to make progress.

The curriculum provision was described as very broad and balanced with numerous extra-curricular activities which are inclusive and aim to make sure that all pupils are involved. The visit report concluded by praising the head teacher, describing her outstanding leadership and support of the subject leader who has a clear vision for PESSPA (Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity).

Kim Hutchison, Head Teacher, said:

"We are incredibly pleased to receive this award. Our comprehensive PE curriculum ensures children take part in a wide variety of different sports and activities for at least two hours a week. I would like to thank my staff and in particular, Mrs Hubbard (PE Leader) for their hard work and commitment. Through our exciting school based and extra-curricular provision, and alongside our dedicated Sports Development Officer, they encourage our children to be Healthy and Active and to achieve positive mental health and wellbeing."

The Association for Physical Education (afPE) is the only PE Subject Association in the UK and are committed to being the representative agency of choice for people and organisations delivering or supporting the delivery of physical education, school sport and physical activity in educational contexts and in the wider community. Their purpose is to promote and maintain high standards and safe practice in all aspects and at all levels of physical education, school sport and physical activity, influencing developments at national and local levels that will impact on pupils' physical health and emotional well-being.
