Last chance to see exhibitions at Candie

Thursday 05 December 2019

This month is the last chance to see one of Guernsey Museum's biggest and most ambitious exhibitions.

To Japan and Back Again: How a Corner of Guernsey Turned Japanese opened on Friday 24 May this year at Candie and has received glowing reviews. It was originally due to finish in September but was extended due to popular demand and flexibility within the exhibition schedule.

The exhibition explores the connections between Guernsey and Japan, using as a focal point the Japanese Japanese House and Temple which were built in Saumarez Park. A tremendous amount of work has gone on behind the scenes, including partial re-constructions of both buildings. Inside the re-constructed house display, visitors can see the original paper screens which have been carefully restored for the occasion.

Items for the display include original objects from the Japanese House and Temple and have been provided by the Museum and an amazing private collection. A host of other stunning examples of the decorative arts of Japan have also been kindly loaned by other island collectors. The main gallery is complemented by a stimulating display about Japanese Manga in the museum foyer.

Elsewhere at Candie, two other exhibitions are also finishing on 31st December. 'William Le Lacheur: The Land He Loved' by Frances Lemmon is a celebration of the Guernseyman from the Forest who became a hero in Costa Rica. The current Timewarp in the Discovery Room, The Spirit of Baker's Bazaar, is supported by an extensive display of 1970s toys. This will be finish at the end of this year and be replaced by a Coding Room for 2020. Candie Christmas is taking place on 8th, 15th and 22nd December and includes art activities, festive films and a Santa's Grotto.

Guernsey Museum is open daily 10.00-16.00. Normal admission rates apply, so Discovery Pass holders and accompanying children are admitted free. Click here to see opening hours during the festive period.

The Museum will close on 31st December and reopen on Friday 24th January with Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2018 from the Natural History Museum.
