Havelet Slipway Tendering Underway

Thursday 23 January 2020

The full shortlisting and tendering process to repair a well-used harbour slipway is now underway, with a view to starting work at Havelet in April 2020.

The slipway, which is the responsibility of Guernsey Harbours and is near Castle Cornet, bore the brunt of bad weather consisting of force ten winds and large wave conditions in November 2018. Since that date, the slipway has been closed to the public and port users as it suffered considerable damage.

Following direction from the Guernsey Ports Board, tenders have been prepared for a reconstruction of the slipway based on an enhanced specification. This is to reduce the likelihood of future storm damage to the structure.

Commercial Manager - Ports Doug Wright said:

"Guernsey Harbours accepts this repair project as part of its wider public realm responsibility, and we recognise the slipway provides convenient access into Havelet Bay for port users. The start date would be dependent on when the successful tenderer is able to mobilise following the awarding of the contract and suitable weather conditions. The project will be challenging, as the successful tenderer will have to work in a marine environment in an exposed location and during limited tidal windows. Currently, we anticipate works to be completed during summer 2020, and further updates will be released when they become available."

Until the tendering process has been completed, Guernsey Harbours is unable to publish its own budget for this project.

The Local Notices to Mariners 005/2019 is still in force, all maritime users are reminded the structure is unsafe to use and is closed until further notice.
