New arrangements for European Union* nationals from January 2021

From 1 January 2021, free movement that was enjoyed between the EU and the United Kingdom which was enabled and governed by the relationship between the UK and the EU ended.

This means that from 1 January 2021 all EU nationals, other than British or Irish nationals, travelling for anything other than visitor purposes, are required to apply for a visa to enter the UK, Bailiwick of Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man, prior to travel.

Those coming for employment to Guernsey require a Visa AND a Population Management document.

  • I am a visitor to Guernsey, can I take up employment in Guernsey?

    • A visitor is unable to take up employment, paid or unpaid. EU nationals coming into Guernsey as a visitor will not have to apply for a visa to travel, but it is important to note that switching from visitor categories into employment will not be permitted. A visitor will only be allowed to stay in Guernsey for up to 90 days within a 12 month period under the Population Management Law without the need to hold a document. If an EU national plans to work in Guernsey, it is imperative that they obtain both the a visa AND Population Management document prior to arrival.

  • Can I travel to Guernsey using my National ID card after 31st December 2020?

    • If you are an EU national AND you have been granted settled or pre-settled status you are able to travel on a valid national ID card or passport until 31 December 2025.
    • If you do not hold settled or pre-settled status and are coming to Guernsey for employment, from 1 January 2021 you will only be able to travel on a valid passport.
    • A visitor can travel on a valid national ID card or passport until 1 October 2021, after this date their national ID card will no longer be accepted.
