The main repairs on the piers at Portelet have been completed and a significant amount of work has already been undertaken on Rousse pier. The work at Rousse has also revealed additional areas in need of repair.
These repairs were scheduled as part of the States' ongoing programme of repair and maintenance of Guernsey's coastal features, such as piers, slipways and coastal paths.
Coastal features differ from defences in that they do not offer significant protection from flooding or erosion, but contribute instead to the Island's unique coastal beauty and often provide access to beaches and bays.
In order to complete repair works at Rousse pier, including additional areas in need of attention, works will be paused and recommenced in March, when the pier can be accessed on the next spring tide.
So far, many voids in the concrete have been filled and repointed along the seaward side of the pier and good progress has also been made in rebuilding the affected areas of the pier.
The scaffolding on the pier will remain in place until works are complete. Extensions have been added to the tops of the scaffolding to make them more visible and signs will be placed at the top of the pier to warn swimmers and boat owners. However, people should still exercise caution when using the pier, particularly on high tides.
