From 1 January 2021, only one guest/observer has been able to attend any baby scan appointment. This is to ensure that the sonographer can concentrate on what is a very detailed medical examination.
Over recent months, HSC has noted an increasing number of people attending for scans with multiple family members - including young children.
HSC has today issued a reminder that anyone who is pregnant may only bring one other person to a baby scan appointment. The accompanying person can be an adult or an older child (14 years or over who must be able to sit quietly during the examination).
Alistair Richards, Radiology Services Manager said:
'An ultrasound baby scan is a detailed medical examination and having more than one observer/guest can distract the sonographer.
We need to ensure that concentration is maintained, and important observations are not missed in order to provide the best possible service we can for those who are pregnant.'
