Keep Guernsey Green Award - Cenkos Channel Islands Limited

Wednesday 08 February 2012

Cenkos Channel Islands Limited has become the latest company to receive the Keep Guernsey Green Award.

To receive the Award, Cenkos had to meet a set of standards to demonstrate its commitment to energy conservation and waste management.

Cenkos Channel Islands Limited's Director, Paul Oliver, said on achieving the Keep Guernsey Green Award:

"Cenkos relocated to the Market Building in February 2011. The Market Buildings were built around the 19th century and although there have been substantial and significant improvements made throughout the years, Cenkos have managed to gain authorisation from Heritage/Environment and the States of Guernsey to make improvements within the office.

This included sound proofing on all meeting and board rooms, installing air conditioning which can be regulated when the office is not in use (at weekends) and the use of low energy lighting throughout. Our aim is to help Guernsey maintain a healthy and clean environment.

In working toward the "Keep Guernsey Green Award" we encouraged staff to put forward their suggestions on managing waste and saving energy. We received good feedback, even a suggestion from one employee regarding the possibility of starting a wormery.

It has been a real team effort, and staff are now fully aware of our policies and what can be achieved within the workplace. In addition, employees are now supporting our ethos in their own homes, where possible, when it comes to recycling and saving energy.

Our main areas are focused on the following policies: recycling, reducing paper usage, reducing electric power consumption and saving water. Suppliers, contractors, and clients are fully aware of our policies and we try to purchase all office goods that are either energy efficient or recycled whenever possible.

Now that we have policies in force and targets have been set for the year, all staff can obtain a regular update on progress and new initiatives through our company handbook which is reviewed on a regular basis, or from bulletins on the notice board in the staff room.

We are pleased to be part of the 'Keep Guernsey Green Award' and believe it to be an excellent endorsement of all the good work that has been done by the participating companies and retail outlets in recent years. We hope that Cenkos are in some way making an impact (if only a small one) on protecting our environment.

There are two choices in life, to accept the environment as it is or accept responsibility for changing it for the better. Surely to accept responsibility for changing it for the better is a win, win situation for everyone."

To achieve the Keep Guernsey Green Award, organisations have to meet a set of standards covering 'Policy and Planning', 'Action' and 'Review and Improvement'.
