At its meeting yesterday, the Committee for Health & Social Care formally appointed 2 non-voting members.
Non-voting members have the same rights and duties as ordinary members (other than the right to vote) and provide expertise and/or experience which complement the political membership.
HSC interviewed 5 individuals for the role in January 2021 and invited Miss Emily Litten and Dr George Oswald to attend committee meetings as a guest for a 2 month period.
Deputy Al Brouard, HSC President said:
'Whilst the last 2 months have been dominated by COVID-19 it has provided the opportunity for both Miss Litten and Dr Oswald to find out more about the work of the Committee and to participate in a diverse range of discussions covering the mandate of the Committee.
The Committee are pleased to formally welcome them now as non-voting members and look forward to working with them, and learning from their experience and expertise as we progress through this political term. When we advertised late last year, we had intended to appoint a single non-voting member. However, we were delighted with the calibre and enthusiasm of candidates and, seeking to build upon the equal priority given to physical and mental health last term, consider that Dr Oswald's and Miss Litten's respective experience will positively complement our work.'
Miss Litten is Chief Executive of Guernsey Mind and is a board member of the Guernsey Community Foundation.
Dr George Oswald was one of the founding doctors of the Medical Specialist Group. A consult physician he had a special interest in the management of diabetes, endocrinology, neurology, acute general medicine and intensive care.
