The Princess Elizabeth Hospital is made up of 12 wards and various departments. Below you will find all the information you should need when visiting.
Patients are treated on the same wards but in different areas to protect privacy.
Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- The Intensive Care Unit is made up of seven beds. We care for a range of Intensive Care and High Dependency patients.
- Infection Control: All visitors are asked to de-contaminate their hands with the hand sanitizer before entering the unit. Visitors are also asked not to sit on patients beds. No fresh flowers are allowed on the unit due to infection risk, but cards and photographs are always welcome.
- Contacting us: Naturally, relatives and friends will want to know of their relatives progress. It is helpful if one person telephones for a daily update and passes information on, allowing us to focus on the care of your loved one. Our obligation to protect patient confidentiality means we can only share information with relatives by prior agreement from the patient and or designated next of kin. - Location: We are located on Level 2.
- Visiting: All visitors are requested to ring the bell and wait for someone to answer the door before entering the unit. Visiting times are flexible although we do have a patient rest period between 1pm and 3pm where we request you don't visit. Visitors are restricted to two at a bedside. We have some overnight relative's facilities if required, please speak to the nursing staff.
- Personal items: We ask that when admitted to the Unit you bring the following items with you.
- Liquid soap/body wash
- Deodorant
- Shaving items
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Comb/hairbrush.
- Disposable cloths are provided so please do not bring in flannels. Patients are dressed in a hospital gown in order for care to be provided more efficiently. We recommend that valuable items are taken home.

Day Patient Unit (DPU)
- Our Day Patient Unit enables you to come in and go home again on the day of your procedure. Our aim is to make your stay, however short, as comfortable as possible.
- The Day Patient Unit is located within the PEH with its own designated entrance and parking directly opposite. Wheelchair access is available through the Accident and Emergency Department which is on the same level as the Day Patient Unit. If you have a disability or any special requirements, please let us know in advance so that we can help you.
- We are open from 7.30 a.m. for patients and close at 7.30pm.
- We are strongly committed to enabling everyone to go home on the same day but occasionally it is necessary to stay overnight as an in-patient to fully recover before going home. As we are unable to offer crèche facilities, please try to make your own child care arrangements.
- Visiting
- Due to very limited space and the short nature of your visit, visitor numbers are limited. Patients are allocated to a space and separated according to gender. However, if you have been accompanied, your visitor may sit with you in the Reception area. In the interest of patient care, privacy and dignity, visiting to the ward bays and waiting rooms is entirely at the discretion of the nurse-in-charge. Exceptions can be made in special circumstances, for example:
- Severe anxiety
- For people with mental health problems
- For vulnerable adults
- All children need to be accompanied for most of their stay
- The Department offers a variety of procedures including surgical, medical investigations, X-Ray, and Endoscopy. Some procedures for those attending Day Patient Unit are performed within the department, whilst others are in the main theatre, X-Ray, or Endoscopy.

Loveridge Ward (Maternity)
- The arrival of a new baby is a special occasion for every mother and the staff on Loveridge Ward at the PEH will do their best to ensure that both you and your baby receive the best possible care.
- The ward has 17 beds and also its own separate delivery suite which will provide a restful environment for both your ante-natal and post-natal care. The neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU) forms part of Frossard Ward and has 3 cots for premature or unwell babies.
- Location: We are located on Level 3.
- Visitors: The Loveridge Ward welcomes no more than three visitors at a time between 3.30-4.30pm and 6.30-7.30pm.
- If you are uncertain or worried about anything before or after your baby is born, please do not hesitate to ask the midwifery staff or specialist who will be more than happy to answer your queries.

Frossard Ward (Children)
- Comprising of 9 beds, Frossard Ward for Children also includes bays and single rooms. Should parents wish to stay the night with their children, the nurse in charge will be happy to arrange this for you.
- Children up till their 18th Birthday can be admitted to the ward; a child between the ages 16 and 18 who are deemed to be "Gillick competent" will be offered the choice of being nursed on an adult or children's ward.
- Location: We are located on Level 3.
- Visiting: Visiting hours are normally before 8am and must end by 8pm. This is to ensure that children can have adequate rest, after this time only parents may visit, however we recognise that visiting must be flexible.
- We encourage a parent to stay overnight with their child and the nurse in charge will be happy to assist you to ensure you are comfortable unfortunately, however we are unable to provide accommodation for both parents unless in extreme circumstances. If you will be staying overnight with your child please feel free to make your own drinks and breakfast.
- Pre-admission club
- To help you and your child understand what will happen during their admission and to help relieve any anxiety, you and your child are welcome to attend a pre-admission club. These are held on alternate Saturday afternoons on Frossard Ward. Please ring the ward if you would like to attend the club.
- Admission procedure
- On admission your nurse will ask you some questions about your child's usual routines and methods of coping. Some of the questions may seem irrelevant to the immediate problem but they help us to know you and your child, and, will help identify their nursing needs while in hospital.
- What your child may need in hospital
- If your child has a special toy they like to keep near them, please bring it into hospital. It doesn't matter how old it is, it will remind them of home and give them a sense of security. If your child is expected to stay overnight, please bring clothes and toiletries.
- Adolescent facilities
- Patients up to the age of 16 will be admitted to Frossard Ward. Rooms are available to suit this age group.
- Security
- Access to Loveridge and Frossard wards is restricted to appropriate nursing, medical staff and porters (who are all issued with a security pass). All other staff and visitors need to press a button at the door in order to gain access, and are also required to inform a member of staff when they wish to leave.
- For reasons of confidentiality, please respect other patients' privacy, and do not ask about other children on the ward.
- Visiting arrangements
- Parents, grandparents and siblings are welcome to visit at any time. Other visitors please talk to the nurses to agree the best time to visit (avoiding ward rounds or treatments).
- Please speak to the nurse in charge if these arrangements are unsuitable. Adolescents may have visitors up to 21.00h at the discretion of the nurse in charge.

- We are very fortunate in having a charity that supports the ward in so many ways. 'Friends of Frossard Children's Ward' have provided teaching resources, parent's beds, presents for the children, and i-pads. - The Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation raises funds for the neonatal unit. Their web site is: http://www.ppbf.org.gg/
- Jake' Heartfelt Funds:
- This local group fundraises to help children with critical and life-limiting illnesses and their families.We are very grateful to them for providing goody bags, which are given to parents accompanying their child for off island emergency treatment.
- Dizzy Donkeys:

- Ernies Angels
- Ernie's Angels was founded in December of 2017 in memory of Ernie who died in September of that year. We have been able to help two local families as well as cover travel costs for two paediatric nurses from Frossard ward to attend a palliative care study day in the UK. We feel that their expertise will be of absolutely vital importance for local families who may need this in the future. Ernie's Angels launched with the cheese project supported fantastically by the Guernsey Dairy, who donated the profits from a limited edition run of Ernie's favourite cheese. This was a very successful first fund raiser for us as it took us into people's homes and raised our public profile much more quickly than we could have managed on our own. We have been extremely well supported in our first year of raising funds and continue to push ahead with raising more awareness of the difficulties faced by families here in Guernsey who are facing losing their child whether through long term illness or unexpected accident or illness. We cannot lessen their pain but our charity's ethos remains that we support them and show them that their community cares. Your support enables us to be there at the darkest time in any parent's life and we understand that we can't change the circumstances but we hope to, at least, lighten the financial burden that these heart breaking circumstances bring.

Carey Ward (Acute Medical Care)
- Carey Ward is one of two acute medical wards within the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and consists of 24 beds. Most patients admitted to Carey Ward will come in via the Emergency Department.
- Carey Ward provides care for a very diverse range of medical specialties.
- Location: We are located on Level 2.
- Visiting Hours: 15:00hrs - 17:00hrs & 18:30hrs - 20:00hrs (please note that if relatives are helping to feed a patient they can stay during mealtimes).

Brock Ward (Acute Medical Care)
- Brock Ward is one of two acute medical wards within the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and consists of 23 beds including a 3-bed observation bay. Most patients admitted to Brock Ward will come in via the Emergency Department.
- Brock Ward provides care for a very diverse range of medical specialities.

- Visiting Hours: 15:00hrs - 17:00hrs & 18:30hrs - 20:00hrs (please note that if relatives are helping to feed a patient they can stay during mealtimes).

De Sausmarez Ward
- De Sausmarez Ward is an orthopaedic ward with 15 beds. We specialise in orthopaedic surgery including elective hip, knee or shoulder surgery. We also care for people with spinal and traumatic bony injuries.
- We advise that if you are having surgery on your hip, knee or shoulder, that you bring loose clothing to wear for when you are discharged from the ward.

- Visiting: The De Sausmarez Ward welcomes no more than three visitors at a time between 3.00-8.00pm.
Victoria Ward
- Victoria Ward is a private ward within the PEH, comprising of 19 private rooms. Sometimes these beds will be used for general patients, this is based on the patients clinical needs.
- As a private patient, the following facilities and services will be available to you:
- A private room with telephone, radio, TV and en-suite bathroom.
- Daily English newspaper and a Guernsey press delivered to your room
- A ward chef who will visit you before each mealtime to take your order from the "a la carte" menu. However should you require any refreshments throughout the day a full service is available.
- Should the menu not be to your liking, the chef will be happy to prepare you an alternative meal. Visitors may also be served with meals or snacks; these will be charged to your account.
- Location: We are located on Level 3.
- Visiting: Visitors are welcome anytime from 11am till 9pm.

Day Assessment Unit (Outpatient Department)
- The DAU as part of the Outpatient Department, provides comprehensive geriatric outpatient services and assessments for patients with complex healthcare needs and includes a falls assessment and treatment programme. Referrals are made via a GP or Hospital Consultant.
- The DAU also accommodates outpatient services as part of the secondary healthcare service for Dermatology, Oral Max Fax, Rheumatology, Haematology, Parkinsons and MS Clincs. Appointments are by referral only via a GP or Consultant.
- The Administrative Team within the DAU also support Orthotics, Plastic Surgery, Paediatric & Congenital Cardiology,
- The unit provides the IV outpatient service where intravenous infusions are administered on an outpatient basis .
- Also based within the department is the Osteoporosis Department providing DEXA scanning appoints - please revert to Osteoporosis Service - States of Guernsey (gov.gg) for full details.
- Location: On entering the PEH grounds, follow the signs for Rehabilitation Unit (the nearest car park is the Le Vauquiedor car park). Enter the building at the new entrance. If you require a porter, please speak to Health Information Exchange Desk for assistance. DAU can be located past the lifts on the ground floor, opposite the courtyard.

Outpatient Department
- The Outpatient Department at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital Guernsey is situated next to the Emergency Department.
- It is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5.30pm and is closed on Bank Holidays.
- The department provides a variety of services as detailed below.
- Fracture Clinics are held within the department Monday - Friday (Mornings only). Referrals to Fracture are made via the Emergency Department. Fracture Clinic is a trauma clinic and wherever possible times assigned for appointments may vary.

- The GP out of hours service operates from the Outpatient Department from 18:00 - 07:59 Monday to Thursday, Fridays - Monday 18:00 - 07:59. Out of hours appointments can only be made by contacting this service directly by calling your usual surgery number and your call will be transferred.
Rheumatology
- Rheumatology is a multidisciplinary branch of medicine which deals with the investigation, diagnosis and management of patients with musculoskeletal disorders. There are over 200 recognised conditions and they can be soft tissue rheumatism, inflammatory arthritis and other inflammatory disorders. Rheumatic diseases can affect both genders and at any age.
- A clinical assessment of a patient with a suspected inflammatory disorder is completed by a Rheumatology Consultant. This includes a physical examination, specific blood investigations and radiology examinations.
- The Rheumatology service available to the Bailiwick of Guernsey is supported by:

- Clinical Nurse Specialist based at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital
- The Rheumatology Consultants visit the Princess Elizabeth Hospital each month and conduct regular clinics in the Outpatient Department.
