A new strategic direction for the Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts

Wednesday 02 November 2022

The Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts (PRCPA) has penned a new strategy, to help drive it toward its goal of educating, inspiring and developing all local theatre-makers and students to allow them to realise their full potential.

The strategy is being used to help clearly define the PRCPA's work and its role in our island community.

The centre, which hosts a range of evening classes, houses the Guernsey Music Service, and accommodates its broad range of theatre performance and community events, will continue serving many different parts of the community. This strategy will help to clarify and communicate the broad range of opportunities for islanders.

It also now has a new mission statement: "[to be the] centre of excellence for the Performing Arts industry in the Bailiwick" and will now be taking a 'theatre first' approach, meaning the team at the centre will make the best use of their space to help support professional and aspiring theatre-makers as well as its current community users.

Oliver Davies, Artistic Director, said:

"At our core, we are an educational establishment that uses theatre to educate and challenge individuals. We help train young performers and technicians while providing opportunities for work in the entertainment industry. We believe that our responsibility is to exceed expectations and be sector-leading by delivering the highest quality productions and services available to our community, helping to establish and develop a thriving theatrical industry for the Channel Islands. As the only purpose-built theatre in the Bailiwick; we aim to increase the opportunities for people to create and engage with live and recorded professional performances either as part of the production or as audience members."

The strategy intends to place the PRCPA at the centre of the developing local industry, and while it does set strategic direction for the team to follow, it also acts as an implementation plan for the next five years to help establish and elevate the work of the Performing Arts by working with both local, and off-island stakeholders.

Located on the future Post-16 Campus and a part of The Guernsey Institute; the PRCPA will also benefit from the developments taking place around it. It will remain open while the campus is built and will act as a key part of the facilities when it is fully opened.

Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, President of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, said:

"The Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts is an important asset to our community, in both a cultural and an educational sense. I know I speak for all of my Committee when I say we were extremely pleased to be able to give this new strategy our full support. It sets a clear vision for the PRCPA to put itself at the centre of performing arts in Guernsey by using the space it provides to bring people across the local industry together. I am very excited to both watch, and support, the continued development of this space, which will eventually sit as one of the key parts of our Post-16 Educational Campus."
