Travel planning for businesses and schools

Travel planning focuses on understanding peoples' travel habits and supporting changes to more sustainable alternatives. These alternatives could be to encourage more cycling, walking or lift sharing. Other areas of travel planning could be to facilitate more use of buses or motorcycles/scooters. By choosing more sustainable transport methods shows that your business or school is acting more responsibly, allows your business or school environment to be cleaner, have reduced traffic congestion and safer roads.

Travel Plans are a package of actions designed by a workplace, school or other organisation to encourage safe, healthy and sustainable travel options to and from that organisation.

By reducing car travel, particularly single occupancy car travel, Travel Plans can help reduce traffic congestion, improve the environment by reducing CO2 emissions, reduce noise pollution and free up car parking spaces for those who need to use a motor vehicle. Those who choose to walk or cycle to work can also benefit from reduced motoring costs, and improved health and wellbeing.

While every organisation's Travel Plan will be different, most successful plans follow a structured process in their development.

We are keen to support businesses increase the number of people commuting to work by bike, bus, walking or lift sharing through the implementation of workplace Travel Plans. We are also support schools to assist them in producing individual school Travel Plans that encourage parents and children to walk or cycle to school, or to look at using a scheduled or school bus or sharing lifts. More information can be found in the downloads section of this page.
