Some simple steps for consumers when dealing with traders who "cold call"

Thursday 24 July 2014

Trading Standards would urge islanders to stop and think before agreeing to invite cold calling traders into their home.

The Trading Standards Service is warning residents to be wary of "cold calling" traders. These traders contact consumers by telephone or knock at their door out of the blue and seek the opportunity to demonstrate their goods or services. It is not always obvious exactly what these traders are trying to sell. Consumers should carefully consider whether the product or service is something they really want or need to buy. If it isn't, the advice is, don't invite a stranger into your home.

If the product or service being offered may be of interest, then Trading Standards would suggest that the following tips are borne in mind:

·         Don't sign anything on the spot.

·         Check the trader's identity.

·         Be wary of so called "special offers".

·         Always shop around for the best price and service.

·         Read the small print carefully.

·         Double check the facts that are presented to you.

·         Talk to someone you trust for a second opinion.

·         Don't hand over a deposit.

·         Think very carefully before agreeing to a trader starting work straight away.

·         If you feel pressured for any reason, ask the person to leave.

·         Trust your instincts. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Unless the trader specifically states, in writing, that there is a "cooling off period" and that you have the right to cancel, you may be bound by the contract.

If there are any doubts about the validity of the trader, the price being quoted or where the trader is based, ask the person to leave.  It's your doorstep and your decision.

If you've asked the trader to leave and he/she refuses, call the Police on 725111 and ask for assistance.

If you have any doubts please call Trading Standards on 234567 to discuss the matter before you agree to buy or sign any documents.
