Update - Storm Damage - Lihou Island

Wednesday 19 February 2014

Environment Department response to media enquiry from Guernsey Press.

Guernsey Press Enquiry:

I have just spoken with Richard Curtis from the Lihou Island Charitable Trust.

He mentioned that there had been some damage around the Lissroy shingle bank in which some ropes and post had been blown down.

He said that it was Environment's responsibility to repair the damage.

Therefore can Environment confirm whether it was aware of the damage?

When does it hope to reinstate the ropes and posts?

How much will this cost?

Any other comments.

Environment Department Response:

The Environment Department is aware of the damage to the ropes and posts. A different form of barrier and signage is being investigated which is less vulnerable to damage by tides/weather.

In the meantime people visiting Lihou are asked to abide by the signs and not walk over Lissroy shingle bank in order to protect the sea birds and their young during the breeding season which ends on 31st July. Please note that dogs are not allowed on Lihou at any time as it is a nature reserve with many ground nesting birds.
