Media enquiry from Paul Ainsworth, Guernsey Press:
I had a media enquiry for Environment relating to the tender it put out for a coastal defence project.
In the tender information, provided on the website, it seems to suggest that this work is focussed on the Bridge.
Firstly, could the department confirm this is the case?
Secondly, what does this contract actually consist of? What are the estimated costs and timeframe etc?
Environment Department response:
As part of the Coastal Defence Flood Risk project the Environment Department requires a feasibility study for St Sampson Harbour. This is in line with the States' decision in 2013 to confirm that St Sampson was the first priority area for coastal defence works to mitigate the effects of coastal flooding associated with sea level rise.
The feasibility study will identify a number of possible options for the installation of flood mitigation measures that will be most effective in protecting the island's essential infrastructure against coastal flood. The study will also provide details of the likely budget costs and ongoing operational costs of the measures evaluated in this process.
Any company experienced in this type of work interested in undertaking the feasibility study is required to return the pre-tender questionnaire by 23rd June. As the feasibility study is subject to a tender process it would not be appropriate for the States to provide an estimate of cost at this time.
It should be stressed that the tender is only for the feasibility study NOT for any resultant engineering works to deliver any of the options that might be identified.
