Guernsey Press Enquiry:
I was hoping to get an update on how many responses the department has had to its request for feedback on the bus service and what the next step will be for the information? Also, what have been popular suggested changes?
This is a story that is planned in for tomorrow, so can you get back to me by 4pm?
Environment DResponse:
The Environment Department has received a wealth of feedback from the public over the last couple of years during consultations on various iterations of proposed summer and winter scheduled bus service timetables. The purpose of this latest consultation was to gather any remaining views or opinions on the proposed frequency, routing and timing of both scheduled and integrated school bus services to better serve the needs of the community.
Unsurprisingly, many of the replies received have expanded into other equally important aspects that help to make a bus service more amenable and attractive to bus users and these comments will also be taken into account when formulating the final package of proposals to be tendered for the new bus contract.
A total of 36 e-mail and written responses were received in relation to this latest consultation together with some 100 individual responses via the Guernsey Press' website forum.
In terms of routes and frequencies, responses included requests for:
- More early morning commuter services into Town;
- Improved night bus services;
- Higher frequencies on certain routes (especially 31 and 71);
- More direct services to places out of Town, including better use of hubs and satellite;
- Red-eye Airport bus to arrive before 6.00am;
- Park and Ride services;
- Services to include Rohais de Haut;
- Reintroduction of old circular Route 1/1A;
- More convenient timings.
On a broader prospective, other suggestions and ideas included:
- Smaller buses;
- Clearer timetables;
- Improved driver knowledge and training;
- Wi-fi on buses;
- Real-time Information;
- Route planner;
- Covered terminus;
- More bus shelters;
- Bus lanes.
