Bus passenger figures for 2014 on scheduled bus routes have risen to 1,467,103 journeys as compared with a total of 1,354,993 in 2013. This represents a significant improvement of 112,110 journeys over the previous year and equates to an increase in ridership of 8.27%.
More notably, passenger figures for the months of June, July, September, October and December 2014 have all exceeded the number of passengers carried in the equivalent months in 2012. The rise in the winter months is particularly encouraging and shows that it is not down to any seasonal variation in the number of visitors carried on our services.
Recent improvements to the Island's route network introduced in October 2014 as part of the Integrated Transport Strategy are considered to have made a positive impact on these passenger numbers. The Department is confident that this growth in passenger numbers will continue in 2015 under the new bus contract which comes into place on 1st April and includes a number of associated service improvements, including a phased replacement of existing buses with new narrower vehicles, and a significant enhancement in information provision to bus users through App and Web enabled Real Time bus information enabling passengers not only to see where their bus is but also to generate and print journey specific routes and timings.
A comparison of monthly/annual bus passenger figures between 2011 and 2014 is attached.
