Petit Port - Steps Opened to the Public

Friday 15 May 2015

The Environment Department is pleased to announce that the repairs to the safety fencing and rock catch fences at Petit Port which were damaged during winter storms of 2013/14 have been completed.  The steps are now open to the public.

This year's annual maintenance schedule to scale the loose surfaces of the cliffs either side of the staircase to the bay has now been completed.  Works to install and repair rock catch fencing at the base of the cliff and to other falling rock risk areas identified on the cliff face have also been undertaken.

Minister for the Environment Department, Deputy Yvonne Burford said:

"The Department is pleased that the works have been completed and the steps to the bay are open again.  The ten-year annual maintenance contract has now come to an end.  As we have previously advised, Petit Port continues to take up a disproportionate amount of our cliffs and coastal budget, at the expense of other places, so we will be continuing to work with the Constables of St Martins to see if we can find a way forward to maintain access to this special bay."

The contractor for the maintenance and repairs was Geomarine Ltd and the works were supervised by the States Property Services Engineers.
