Update - Bus Interchange - Island Development Plan

Friday 15 May 2015

Media Enquiry from Guernsey Press:

I'm in the process of looking through all the aspects of the draft Island Development Plan.

One point of interest (in the regeneration section of the plan) was the suggestion of a bus interchange facility being created on South Esplanade.

The plan states - 'The bus terminus and adjacent paving represents a large area of underused land.  There is potential for an innovative development here that could incorporate a bus interchange facility, if needed.  A redesigned road layout in this area would allow a new wide pedestrian promenade along the waterfront complemented by new buildings with larger floorplates capable of housing shops, offices, residential and hotel uses.'

As the provision of bus facilities is the responsibility of Environment, I was keen to find out more about this suggestion and what it could involve, and whether any plans or ideas have been drawn up?

Environment Department Response:

The quote referred to in this media enquiry is taken from Annex IV to the draft IDP dealing with the Regeneration Areas.

The Annex contains visions for each of the Regeneration Areas which have taken into account the wider Visions produced for Town and The Bridge by the Vision Team along with the relevant provisions of the Strategic Land Use Plan.

Once the IDP is approved, and before a Regeneration Area can be developed, it will be subject of a Development Framework which will provide further guidance with regard to the type of development that will be acceptable. Proposals for development within the Regeneration Areas must also comply with the policies set out in the Island Development Plan, when approved.

The ideas and visions contained in Annex IV to the draft IDP would be taken into account in preparation of a Development Framework in due course, and do not represent firm proposals at this stage.
