The Environment Department is proposing to replace the existing four short-term parking spaces in the lower section of Cornet Street (adjacent to the Picquet House) with 4 half-hour spaces for small cars.
Principal Traffic Officer Colin Le Page said
"There is currently no short-term parking allocated to 'small cars' in Town and the area was chosen not only for its central location, but on road safety grounds because it is located in a very narrow section of road where passing vehicles are frequently forced to mount the pavement on the left hand side of the road when passing parked cars.
There is already a vehicle width restriction in place along this section of parking, but the width of the spaces will be reduced to 1.7m to accommodate smaller cars and give more space for vehicles to pass without mounting the footpath. The length of the spaces will be 3.6m, which is the standard length of parallel small parking spaces, similar to the long-term parking spaces already in place at the North Beach and on the Careening Hard Arm of the Crown Pier."
Small car parking signs will be installed at each end indicating that vehicles must be parked within the marked bays. Drivers who park their vehicle on or outside of the white lines risk receiving a Fixed Penalty Ticket from the Police.
