Free tours will be offered to members of the public by the Island Archives to mark International Archives Day.
This is a global event for archivists and records managers in order to make known the role of archives and share the experience and the importance of their work.
The tours will give a behind the scenes view of the 1874 deconsecrated St. Barnabas Church at the top of Cornet Street, St. Peter Port.
The tour will begin in the reception area with an explanation of the work undertaken to maintain an extensive collection of records of the States of Guernsey and many others of families, institutions and parishes, both ancient and modern.
An explanation will also be given of these historical records held of local interest, mainly concerning Guernsey, but also including an extensive Alderney collection.
Visitors will then be shown around the three floors to see how the building was converted to a modern archives centre, whilst retaining many original features of the church. During the tour visitors will be able to see examples of some of the records we have.
At the end of the tour there will be a display in the Guille Chapel of archival quality packaging used to preserve documents in optimal conditions.
Tours will take place at 10:00am, 12:00noon and 2:00pm by appointment only.
Please email archives@gov.gg to book your place.
