Guernsey Museum will open for the first time this year on Friday, 2nd April, and its feature - Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition - will be on full display.
This exhibition has been extended until the 16th May with permission from the Natural History Museum. It features ninety-nine exceptional images which capture fascinating animal behaviour, spectacular species and the breath-taking diversity of the natural world.
While the Museum was closed in January, the Discovery Room was transformed and will focus on the Vikings this year. Staff and volunteers have been busy behind the scenes making costumes, props and hand-painting murals. The centrepiece is part of a replica Viking Ship, created by the museum's technical team, for the Timewarp area of the room. High quality replica Viking objects will be on display in a 'treasure chest' and visitors will be able to play draughts using exact copies of the Viking gaming counter discovered in Guernsey. The display cabinets in the room have also been changed and now house a selection of sculptures from the main Museum collection, some of which have not been on public display before. These artworks have been showcased on social media during the lockdown period.
This year marks 10 years since the first Timewarp role play area was created at Guernsey Museum. Back in 2011 the setting was Ebenezer Le Page's sitting room which was created to mark the first year of the Guernsey Literary Festival. This year's Timewarp and the Viking theme in the Discovery Room will run from 2nd April - 31 December 2021.
In the Rona Cole art gallery, a portrait of photographer of Fiona Adams, painted by Elizabeth Adams, has been added to our artworks.
Guernsey Arts will also launch their first exhibition of the year in the greenhouse gallery 5 x 10by Nina Molnar and Christine Shaw. The artists initially inspired by 5 books and 10 words, go on their separate journeys in developing ideas and process in creating artworks for this project. The exhibition is sponsored by Arts Foundation Guernsey and will run until the 9th May.
Castle Cornet, Fort Grey and the German Naval Signals HQ will all open on April 30th. The Castle would have opened on March 23rd this year, however it has been pushed back so staff can catch up after lockdown after being redeployed.
Any Discovery Passes bought last year were extended to the end of 2021 to compensate for the reduced season after the first lockdown.
