A survey has identified risks to the safety of Islanders using the Petit Port steps, following a land slip last year. As a result, the steps are being temporarily closed until remedial works can be completed.
An initial land slip occurred last year, and rock catch fencing successfully prevented much of the material falling on the pathway. A drone survey was then carried out in December, due to the difficult nature of accessing the slip area. That survey has now been reviewed by an expert technical engineer. Their review warns that there is a risk to members of the public and it recommends that the steps be closed and remedial works be undertaken. In particular, there is a concern that the rock catch fencing no longer has the capacity to cope with further rockfalls and they would instead land directly on the footpath potentially causing injury to anyone using the steps.
The steps are therefore being closed from today. Work is also taking place to plan for the removal of material from the slip area and from behind the rock catch fencing to make the area safe again so that the steps can be re-opened.
ACLMS will continue to keep the community informed on the progress of these essential works.
